Kannada Habba 2010 Poster Kannada Habba 2010

Dear Irish Kannadigas,
Those who attended the 5th Kannada Habba celebrations today would all agree that it was yet another memorable event. We have been fortunate enough to have a small group of very motivated and dedicated members amongst us who inspite of their busy day to day work schedules like us never fail to organise any important function in the Kannadigas calendar. We all know organising such an event cannot be done overnight and needs weeks of preparation and planning. Their continued devotion of time for keeping our culture afloat and making us feel home away from home is to be very much appreciated.

On our own behalf and on behalf of Irish Kannadigas may I thank the organisers for their perseverence and efforts in organising these functions. Also I would like to thank everyone who attended the function today as I feel it is our attendance and support that provides motivation and ammunition to the organisers.

Fellow Irish Kannadigas, let us continue to show our support like this and I sincerely hope many more will be able to attend these functions in future as they provide opportunities to our kids to keep in touch with our culture.

Thanks again to one and all.
With all good wishes from
Ramesh and Bhama

Ugaadi Habbadha Haardhika Shubhashayagalu

Ugadi is the first day of the Hindu calendar (first day of the first month, the Chaitra).

In Karnataka and also in some parts of the country, the tender leaves of neem mixed with jaggery are distributed on the occasion. The neem, extremely bitter in taste, and jaggery sweet and delicious, signify the two conflicting aspects of human life - joy and sorrow, called as ‘Bevu-Bella’ (a mixture of neem and jaggery in equal measure).

Happy Ugaadi

This denotes the acceptance by man of all the sweet (jaggery) and bitter (neem) things that are in store for him in the coming year, with gratitude.

People look forward on this occasion is the Obattu, a sweet prepared mostly in Karnataka which comes in various varieties like Kai Obbattu, Bele Obbattu, Sakkare Obbattu etc.

Happy Ugaadi
